A splash of Fashion

Cultural Cocktail Hour caught up with Harper’s Bazaar’s Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey this weekend.This image from her latest book evokes touches of Caillebotte. It depicts Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz floating on Central Park Lake. Elbaz dashed from the lake to attend the 2005 CFDA awards. Bailey revealed that at the ceremony, she “heard a squalching sound” behind her: Elbaz’s sopping footwear. He had just won best international designer. As he walked on stage, no doubt the audience realized that they could not walk a hundred miles in his shoes.

When asked about her favorite artistic haunts in LA, Bailey replied without missing a beat that she enjoys visiting artist Hutton Wilkinson because of the Tony Duquette estate (Dawnridge). “It is a jewel of LA,” declared Bailey.

In the news: “Black Swan” choreographer spearheads LA Dance Project

The Music Center has announced the formation of LA Dance Project, led by “Black Swan” choreographer and actor, Benjamin Millepied. Millepied, formerly a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, will premiere the new troupe on Sept 22 and 23, 2012 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.  The ballet company’s vision veers away from traditional methods and will instead be an “art collective,” drawing on the vast resources of artists and institutions in Los Angeles. LA Dance Project hopes to perform at MOCA and other non-traditional spaces.

The juxtaposition of ballet and museums sounds like a cultural cocktail worth imbibing!

Salvador Dalí and the Scuba Diving Fiasco

Salvador Dalí, surrealist extraordinaire, decided to lecture at the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition dressed to the nines in scuba gear.

He commenced giving his speech, Fantomes paranoiaques authentiques (authentic, paranoid, phantoms) when suddenly, he could not breathe.

As Dalí waved his hands for help, the audience laughed uproariously. The more he suffocated and gesticulated, the louder they laughed. The audience mistook what could have been a tragedy for slapstick comedy. Luckily, Dalí was able to unscrew his scuba helmet without losing consciousness.

As he gasped for air, Dalí exclaimed,” I just wanted to show that I was ‘plunging deeply’ into the human mind.”
